Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is First Aid and why do we need to know it?

First Aid is emergency aid or treatment given to someone injured, suddenly ill, etc., before regular medical services arrive or can be reached. (Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006)

2. What is my role as a First Aider?

As a First Aider, you can be the most important link in the CHAIN OF SURVIVAL between the casualty and Emergency Services, when you recognize signs and symptoms of injury and illness. Your knowledge and skills can make the difference between rapid or extended recoveries, temporary or permanent disabilities and most significantly, life or death.

3. What exactly is the Chain of Survival?

chain of survival

The Chain of Survival is a proven, logical link-based approach, initiated by an individual, which provides the victim of an emergency the best chance of survival.
  1. Early access to 911
  2. Early CPR
  3. Early Defibrillation
  4. Early Advance Life Support

4. Am I obligated to administer First Aid/CPR in an emergency?

The straight answer is ‘no’. Ideally, you can enhance the Chain of Survival and initially care for a victim of an emergency or accident by utilizing your First Aid and CPR skills. If you feel your safety is compromised or you feel uncomfortable with the situation, you can still help by calling 911 and initiating the Chain of Survival.

5. What happens if I do something wrong when administering First Aid/CPR?

According to the Good Samaritan Act, if you provide assistance to an ill, injured or unconscious individual as a result of an accident or other emergency, you are protected from liability.

6. How do I get certified in Emergency First Aid/CPR and additional courses?

Select a course that best suits your needs, enroll, attend and complete the appropriate course requirements. Upon completion, a certification card is issued.

7. Do you accommodate people with learning, medical or physical challenges?

In the majority of instances we are able to accommodate to meet individual and/or a communities’ needs and requirements. We will do our best to make the necessary arrangements and ask that you inform us of any special requests you may have in advance of the course.

8. How often do I need to recertify?

Certification for each course varies and can be located at the bottom of each specific course outline. Heaven Can Wait staff will notify you 90 days prior to your certification renewal date.

9. Is it beneficial for me to take more than one course?

Many people feel empowered after courses and seminars and subsequently decide to continue their training to enhance and build upon their skills and knowledge.

10. Is there a minimum age requirement to take courses?

Our youngest participants, who partake in our very popular “Cool” Aid First Aid for Kids are aged 5 through 11 (grades 1-6).
